For the Presidium Multi Tester III (PMuT III), it is using thermal and electrical conductivity to identify diamond against moissanite and diamond simulants. Specifically, thermal conductivity to separate Diamond against simulants, and electrical conductivity to separate Diamond and Moissanite.
For colorless CVD Lab grown diamonds, they have similar thermal conductivity to natural diamonds. When tested with the PMuT III, we are seeing that most colorless CVD diamonds are testing as “Diamond” on our PMuT III.
For HPHT diamonds, we are aware that due to certain manufacturing processes, may cause some HPHT diamonds to conduct electricity, which may give a “Moissanite” reading on PMuT III.
If the customer is concerned on lab-grown CVD /HPHT diamond, I would recommend purchasing both PMuT III and Synthetic Diamond Screener II (SDS II) (997 2713). The customer may first use PMuT III to separate Diamond from moissanite and diamond simulants. After getting a positive “Diamond” reading on PMuT III, he can then test the diamond with SDS II to check if it is a Natural Diamond or Type IIa diamond (which is likely to be CVD or HPHT diamond).
